Testimonial: Remy Lucas - MSc RAM 2005-2006

Published on January 3, 2007

I entered EDHEC Business School in second year, just after completing my bachelor's degree and was impressed from day 1 by the excellence of the professors and their teaching methods, which are in my opinion the main asset of EDHEC. After my gap year I chose to follow the MSc Risk & Asset Management programme as it represented a real challenge for me.

Upon completing my last course of the MSc in Risk & Asset Management, I started an internship at UBS Investment Bank in Paris in a Structured Product Sales Internship that I had found well before finishing my class. As a sales person, I work in the Front Office Department of the Investment bank.  Basically being in the front office is being at the top of the structure,  where traders act, where there is Sales, structurers, upper-management and Operating. Middle Office regroups the many people who check the work has been done properly while the Back Office is the administrative part of the job.

On a day-to-day basis my role is to provide the necessary information to my colleagues (senior salespeople) for them to trade with customers, I am also in charge of daily and weekly reports that are essential to the continuous investment process customers are looking for. These are usually the tasks given to a Junior Sales person before starting to have and develop a portfolio of customers, so I would say that at the moment, I am still learning a lot, and it has to be that way in order to increase my confidence with the many products of the company.

Now, after a few months at UBS, I have decided to accept an offer made by BNP Paribas Securities Japan, to go and work in Tokyo in Equities & Derivatives Sales, which was my first goal. This will be done through a VIE contract, a specific contract allowing me to be paid by the French government while working abroad and providing me with all the necessary support such as accommodation, insurance and even transportation (for more information on this specific type of contract please visit http://www.civiweb.com).

The unbeatable, high standards at EDHEC, combined with the excellence of the EDHEC Risk & Asset Management Research Centre members who were teaching in our class, helped me to understand more about the world of capital markets. I would say that realistically, all the courses I had at EDHEC are relevant to my current position as I can understand the entire process leading to the birth of a new deal. I now understand the structuring part, the trading part and act in the selling part, but I have also come to understand the important role of the middle and back office that truly are essential to get the business going.

Would I recommend EDHEC Business School? Definitely! I would recommend it to anyone as I spent the most incredible years of my life there.  Not only does the school have an excellent reputation, but there is also an EDHEC spirit, a very strong link between students and teachers, no doubt formed through the intimate size of the class and I hope this bond will last far into the future.
